The popular 200 D with the OM 615 engine producing 40 kW (55 hp) and an unladen weight of almost 1.5 tons was underpowered at the time. Nevertheless, its high towing capacity made it very popular as a tractor for livestock trailers. This combination shaped the image of the sluggish diesel car ("Wanderdüne", "Schweine-Daimler", "Farmer-Benz") in the 1970s, a perception that has persisted to some extent to this day.
